Police: Latrobe Teen Put M-80 Between Thighs To Muffle Explosion
Wednesday, January 28, 2009 – updated: 10:27 am EST January 28, 2009

LATROBE, Pa. -- Police said a Latrobe teenager who lost his right hand and leg in an explosion has acknowledged playing with a powerful firework, and was not targeted or threatened as he first told police.

Wesley Kimmick, 17, of Latrobe, remains hospitalized at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh after a Jan. 10 explosion at his grandmother's home.

Latrobe police said the teenager was playing with a large firecracker like an M-80 in his grandmother's house.

"There was a quarter stick of dynamite in the house where he was staying, and he got a hold of it and it blew him up basically," said his mother, Heather Adams.

The boy kept lighting and extinguishing the fuse and when it wouldn't go out, police said he put the firework between his thighs and covered it with his right hand in hopes of muffling the explosion.

Police said the boy first told them the explosive blew up in a backpack after he was the target of threats from unknown people.

cursing and princesses

We are not allowed to curse in our house and growing up we really weren't allowed to even do the 'fake' cursing. Like freakin was a big one. My mom hates it. Of course you hear the all to well known phrase of 'you can say it when you move out' and that is exactly what I did. Freakin has to be one of my favorite 'curse' words.

Of course kids pick up everything and as such Juliet says it every once and a while. I tell her she is not allowed to say it and make a mental note not to say it around her. Now she can say oh my goodness and often uses this phrase with a wicked smile like she just got away with something.

yesterday on our daily drive from preschool to daycare she is talking to me and herself and she realizes she has an applesauce in her backpack left over from snack. She asks me if she can have it and of course I say yes. She then looks for the spoon I usually pack with it. Well either I forgot or she lost it and this is the conversation that followed:

Juliet: where's my freakin spoon.
Me: what did you say?
Juliet: where is my freakin spoon.
Me: you shouldn't say freakin its and icky word
Juliet: Oh, ok.

she thinks about it and looks back in her back pack

Juliet: well then where is my oh my goodness spoon.

haha. it was great!

then today she was talking about her great backpack with the princesses on it. Then she says

Juliet: I don't like peoples only princesses.

Me: oh does that mean you don't like me?

Juliet: no I only like talking to princesses?

Me: so you don't' like talking to mommy?

Juliet: no....I love talking to you.... (she says the next part to herself but load enough to make sure I hear) .... about princesses.

I thought ok I've just been put in my place. I am only an acceptable talking buddy if we are talking about princesses. good to know. :)

Six weeks

In six weeks we are going to have a great time. In six weeks Jason comes home and after not seeing him for six weeks that will be exciting. In six weeks we are going to jump in the car (actually more like drag ourselves) drive to California, visit Jason's mom for a day, hop back in the car (again more like dragging) and drive north to see his brother and grandfather. Now don't get me wrong that will be all fun and stuff but I am excited for what comes after that!

DISNEYLAND

I love Disneyland. Absolutely love it. I worked for Disney for a year and a half and loved that too. I love their ideas, their creation, their imagination, their morals and pride. I love that no matter where you are in the world you mention Disney and it's universal, everyone knows what your talking about.

did you know that Mickey Mouse's ears are the third most recognized symbol in the world following the golden arches and the coke bottle. That's pretty amazing considering there are six billion people in the world.

But back to our excitement, not only are we going to Disneyland, a couple of things, we are going with our whole family. Mom, Dad, Me, Jason, Juliet, Tyler, Deborah, Rebekah, Aaron, Alexander, Jackie, Marina and Eric. course Kieth is coming too but he lives there. :) and this will be Juliet and Eric's first time going to Disneyland. how fun!

needless to say I can't wait. I am counting down the days and buying our tickets and all that jazz. I'm super excited!!!!!

Controlled burns

So out here in the great state of Nevada, we get a lot of stuff called sagebrush and a lot of weeds. We can't help it, we're a desert! :) we also have a lot of farmers... I know it sounds like an oximoron that there are famers in the desert but there are and so they get plagued by these noxious weeds and sagebrush and that is where controlled burns come in. They get permits to be able to collect and/or burn these weeds.

My good friend Crystal and I drove out to Yearington on Saterday for an Entertaining at Home party we were doing. On the way there we saw several farmers burning and Crystal asked me what they were doing. So I explained.

side bar: Crystal is what we call a true airhead. She can be smart in some things but complelty way off base when it comes to most common sense things.

So on the way back from yearington on a stretch of rode that really doesn't have anything on it. We see two police cruisers, a fire truck and an

Bad healthy food?

Ever notice how you crave things that are not good for you. This includes healthy food. for instance I loooooove broccoli. You can dress it up with just about anything, you can eat it raw, steamed, baked, cooked, bbq'd...even fried (tempura), you can put it in salad, on the side or all by itself. Its the cool kid on the block, it knows how to party but still delivers the good stuff.

There is only one problem with broccoli....I can't have it, well I shouldn't have it. It gives me gnarly breath....like seriously bad stuff and it gives me the worst stomach ache. I know for a fact that when I eat broccoli of any kind I will need to bring a gas-x or something (i know TMI - but get over it! hehe)

This totally bums me out, because me wanting to be more healthy, choose to eat veggies and what is on the top of my veggie list....broccoli. If I have to eat the good stuff might as well eat the stuff I like, but it kills me.

I usually end up eating it anyway. It helps me in two ways. I get he veggie requirement and my stomach ends up hurting so bad that I don't feel like eating anything else. So I guess I could look at it as a blessing in disguise. :)

o well. I'm still ganna eat it up. Yum broccoli.

Really...is it that suprising?

yesterday I ran some errand and one of those errands was getting some gas. I didn't want to fill up since I am getting paid on Friday, I just needed enough to get me around for the next few days. So into AMPM I pull and use one of those nifty kiosks because I didn't want to drag Juliet all the way into the store and back again for $5.00 worth of gas.

I put in my five dollar bill watch the little light turn green, hear the ticking of the machine as it counts it to make sure that really is what I put in. Then something peculiar happens...out spits the five dollar bill and up pops a message on the screen "$5.00 accepted, push enter to continue".. 'um no' I think, 'stupid machine counted my money and then gave it back' thinking it was a mistake I try again. I put the bill back in and it clicks, the light turns green and up pops the message again. Now its telling me I have $10.00 to pump. So trying my hardest to be a good person and being honest in our dealing with our fellow men, pump the ten and then drive around to the door.

I lug Juliet in, talk to the cashier, who looked at me as if I had just sprouted a talking pimple on my nose then called for her boss. He comes out and I explain the situation again. "i just don't want you to be short in your till or machine today so here is the other five dollars" He looks at me much the same way and says " thanks for being so honest".

As I was walking out I heard a lady say, well that was nice, you don't see that everyday....what? what do you mean you don't see that everyday? I have a child who I need to rear up to find what is honest and good in the world, who needs to know right from wrong and me paying the five dollars that I pumped into my gas tank was something out of the norm.

Really is it that surprising that I would come in and pay the extra five dollars? I mean I could have driven off with a fat five bucks in my pocket and a full ten bucks worth of gas in my tank. But I didn't want it coming back on me. I would feel bad for weeks and probably never go back to that gas station again, thinking in some weird way they would find out what I had done and then demand the five plus interest. haha. but no really I found it very sad and perplexing that they would find this act of honesty random and almost unwelcome. It was like they were waiting for the catch.

I do have to wonder how many of the people in line that heard my story thought to themselves 'I wouldn't have done that' or 'wow, that was cool', or 'what an idiot - shoulda taken the gas and run with it'.

I wont' lie, that thought did cross my mind for a brief moment and for that moment I actually thought 'wow, Heavenly Father is helping me get some extra gas', but then I thought that is not the way he would do it and maybe this is a test on my part...to see if I had actually paid attention in Sunday school the day before. :) well I hope I passed. And I hope that maybe it inspired people to be more honest, even with the small things.

spelling

Juliet is three going on four, I think she's a smarty pants. Mostly because we expect it of her. We never really let her think she couldn't do something in the first place and instead made it seem the norm that she could or should be able to do something. My parents did this and it seemed to work out ok so there you go.

Yesterday I had off and Juliet was so nice in letting me sleep in way late and since I had the rest of the day I thought I would take her to the movies. We were on our way out the door when I called my mom to see what time she was getting off work. She asked me what I was doing and not wanting to spoil the surprise of where I was taking Juliet I spelled out the word Movies.

That's when Juliet piped up and and said 'mom why are we going to the movies?' .... here we go. I don't know if it is because movies is one of those words that pronounces the way its spelled so its easier to decipher or if she really is catching on to words and how they are spelled. Either way I have to twice as careful what I say and now spell. :)

gotta love it.
